For my Practicum in the Fall of 2019, I was placed in Kettering Middle School. I worked with 6th graders in their Art class, and got to create one, five-unit lesson, that I taught to two periods of Art. I created a lesson where the 6th graders would learn how to digitally render online, using a free program called sketch.io. We then turned these digital renderings into stickers by printing out the students designs out on Avery Shipping Labels.

I got this idea for my lesson because of how big of a trend stickers were with my students. I wanted to incorporate a digital project because all of my students had school chrome books, and it was something they had never done before. I researched and found a free program that students were able to access on their chrome books. Sketch.io. I wanted my lesson to relate back to my Teaching Philosophy about building Identity, so I had students learn about using symbols to describe their identity visually. We incorporated these symbols into the sticker designs.
Student Work
The students had wonderful back stories and inspiration for the symbols they picked and wrote about them in a final reflection. We had a gallery walk where students got to talk about their process, successes and mistakes. Many students liked working digitally while others thought it was too challenging. Students also got to participate in a sticker trade at the end of the lesson. Each student got to keep 8 of their own stickers (2 saved by the CT and me) so they were able to trade with other students and collect different designs. Many students put their stickers on their notebooks and folders which showed me they were proud of their work and wanted to show them off. Overall, for the first full lesson I created, I am really proud of how they turned out!
